Well, yes, indeed, what is that word? Where does it come from?
Many people think it is my last name and some even affectionately call me “Coli”!
No, no, no, no! No way! We’ll have to look elsewhere for the explanation.
What is the real reason?
I’ll try to shed a light on this mysterious case…
1. Your guesses….
I must admit that I had lots of fun reading all your answers. Even if many came very close to the explanation, some of your ideas were very amusing!
Below some of your proposals:
– Any connection to Colgate? Like I have a clean mouth so I can speak a new language well?
– “Coli + glote”: “Coli” means “flow” and “glottis” the throat: the new tongue will flow alone in my throat?
– Ingrid wanted to write “polyglot”, but she just spelled it wrong? (Way to go, a teacher who makes mistakes… It’s time for Ingrid to improve her French!)
– “Colig + lote”: like “colleagues” and “struggle”. We are colleagues in language learning, but may the best win!
-Tongue in a package… a gift, in short.
-Glottophagy maybe?
-Pretty like Ingrid, like a coliglote teacher, it’s simple, isn’t it?
-Colige + lot?
-« Coulis” = tomato sauce, “Glotte” = throat, therefore “throat filled with tomatoes”?
– I think your name is Colette and since you speak several languages you have merged your name with the word polyglot , which gives Coliglote!
2. The mystery finally revealed!
Really, dear friends, you came up with about all possible hypotheses, even the craziest!
Here is finally the solution to this dark enigma:
The Coliglote application is based on two main principles: mutual aid and languages.
- To remind us of this concept of mutual help, to be together there is nothing better than this little prefix “co-“, especially for Latin languages. Like colleague, coincidence,…
- To remind you that these are languages, and even many languages, I have chosen to use the word “polyglot”. Why this word and not another? Because this word is known in a very similar way in all languages.
See for yourself for the languages of Coliglote version 1:
- French: un polyglotte
- English : a polyglot
- Spanishl : un políglota
- German : ein Polyglott
- Italian : un poliglotta
- Portuguese : um poliglota
- Dutch : een polyglot
- Russian : полиглот
- Tagalog : polyglot
I thought that this would make the allusion clear…
- So Coliglote = co- + -liglote = all together + polyglot
We will help each other together by sharing our language skills to become multilingual!

7 April 2020 at 10 h 24 minBonjour Charlotte, in fact I am a simple French teacher with a passion for foreign languages and the history of languages. I decided to embark on a crazy project which is the creation of an application to learn and teach languages and of this blog to share my passions… and voilà!
